Grete's Great Gallop

I ran a really shitty race today. I might feel better about it if I knew the cause, but nothing comes to mind. I ate right yesterday, didn't drink too much last night, got an okay amount of sleep. I didn't start too fast, didn't take the hills too aggressive. Everything seemed to be going to plan.

Well, everything except for that whole running fast thing... Early on (like mile 1), I felt drained and knew I would fade soon. By mile 4, it was happening. I slipped to the upper 6's. Then, about 5 miles later, I slipped even further, to low 7's. Eventually, I finished in 1:31:18, over six minutes away from my target for the day. That overall 6:58/mile pace was not even target marathon pace. Shit.

The only good news was that the rest of the morning went well. I ran into Elizabeth and her friend before the start, then met up with Antonio, Baker, and fellow GMR runner Rick in the corral. Saw them all again at the end and then loaded up on the best post-race spread ever. Plums, waffles, bagels with lox. Amazing.

So, this race will definitely be on my calendar for 2010. I have a feeling that lox will taste even better when served with a side of redemption.

Didn't run the race but did run this morning and, man, was it humid. (Virtually everyone I saw on my run had long sleeves on; they must have been dying.) I saw a number of slow times in the race among folks I know. It's strange, but it was almost like the first hot run in the spring. We got used to a bit of a chill very quickly, that we weren't prepared for this.

So this was definitely not the day for a good run.

Yeah, it was definitely the humidity. 97% at race start. It's very deceptive...you don't realize how it affects your racing until you're soaked, can't breathe, and can't run because you're carrying an extra 2lbs of wet clothes. It was so bad, I had toe cramps after the race!

Despite my intentions, I didn't make it to the starting line. And sounds like I am glad I missed it....I had a bad Grete's several years ago and have redeemed myself yet, so good luck with it. 97% humidity...wow! Coming from someone who ran all those spring races in the rain and what seemed to be 100% humidity,it definitely gets to you.

Change the times and my race report would be identical, including coming in over 6 minutes slower than my goal time. The first four miles were at exactly the pace I wanted (and should've had no problem running, easier than tempo pace) and I felt like complete hell. I was in a daze from mile 2, adding a mental aspect to legs that didn't move the way I wanted. Ugggh.

The predicted rain (or the light rain at midday) would have been preferable.

The day was ugly, like the NYC Half. The weatherman does not seem to like half-marys.

But that food. . . !

Yet another "had to be the humidity". That was an awful morning for the whole upper East coast. No way would I be able to run well in that soup. In fact, I was thinking to myself that day how glad I didn't have a quality run because it was so gooey out.
